Great Deal Onkyo HT-SR600 5.1 Home Theater Entertainment System (Black)

I knew for 5 this wasn't going to be the best home theatre system ever, but expected a descent system from Onkyo. The reviews were so-so and when I first installed the system I thought it was good for the money but not the best I had ever heard. I have digital (Comcast) cable and many stations are broadcast in HD and DTS digital sound. I had friends over for the Superbowl 2008 and watched it in HD and Digital Surround Sound. I gotta tell you, when Tom Petty came on at half time, I set the volume at 75 and I could have sworn we were at the show..........in the front row. My friends were just as impressed as I was. It blew us all away. The only bad thing about it is that it was Brets last game. I'll miss you Bret.
My family room where the system is installed is 14 feet wide and 25 feet long. Not a huge room but a good size for this system I would say. It took some tweeking of the settings, and I would not recommend this system to someone that isn't willing to (play) with the controls a little. There are a lot of parameters you can adjust and it took some research on the internet (and talking to friends) for me to get it tuned in. Onkyo ROCKS!

I made the mistake of buying this sound system.
Not that it is bad... But it wasnt for me.
Although i has a good sound, the sub is under powered, even after changing the receiver settings.
The receiver has no HDMI.

Other than that i like everything else.
I am upgrading receiver to Onkyo 506 or 606.
I am upgrading sub to Dayton SUB-100 HT Series 10"

Sounds Great to me! - Thomas M. Beck - Tempe, AZ United States
I just picked this sytem up yesterday at Fry's Electronics for 3.00. It was supposed to be on sale for 1.00, I'm not going to argue with an additional .00 savings.

Set-up was a breeze and it sounds great. I hooked it up differently than they instructed for using a: Cable Box, DVD Player and a TV. As I have HDMI cables from my Cable Box and DVD Player to my Plasma TV. This is how my Plasma TV said to connect (RCA Cables from The Home Theatre OUT Connections)

You can't beat the sound for 3.00 !!!

On top of that, can you wallmount your speakers with 4-axis tilt capability? The HT-SR600 5.1-channel receiver/speaker package provides a compelling answer without burdening you with the price tag carried by more complex separate components and 7.1 speaker systems.

Yamaha YSP-3050BL Digital Sound Projector

Great Deal Yamaha YSP-3050BL Digital Sound Projector

The Yamaha YSP-3050 is my first soundbar purchase, and I settled on it after reading lots of reviews (both professional and peer) which praised its sound quality. I was interested in a soundbar because I was averse to setting up a true 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system for various reasons, and Yamaha was consistently rated at the top of the field. I took advantage of Amazon's offer of a free Yamaha YST-FSW050BL Advanced YST II Down-Firing Active Subwoofer with purchase.

SOUND: This is the most important factor, in my book. I'm happy to say the reviews I read were accurate, and the sound quality of the device does not disappoint. I was pleasantly surprised at how good of a job the soundbar does at simulating 5.1 sound. My room does not match either of the "ideal" layouts described, and I utilized the automatic calibration function, and the sound is excellent in 5 beam mode and stereo + 3 beam mode. My friend owns a Sony HTC Soundbar, and he commented that the Yamaha seemed to have slightly superior sound. Either way, the audio for my Blu-Rays and video games have never sounded better. I haven't spent as much time testing out "built-in" subwoofers because I have an external one, but from what I can tell the addition of the external subwoofer is a substantial benefit for bass fans. I'm glad I got it.

SETUP: Setup was relatively simple, especially for HDMI devices. It should be fairly obvious what connectors go where. However, there are a few potential snags for the unwary. One annoyance was the fact that all the inputs/outputs (except HDMI) on the rear panel are downward facing, so reconfiguring them requires turning the entire soundbar on its side. Another confusing feature was the ability to reassign audio inputs to video inputs. As an example, you can select AUX1 optical as the audio input to associate with your component video input, or you can select an RCA analog input to associate with the same video input. This is an extra level of configuration that is helpful (and by design saves space on the rear panel), but can be confusing to learn. Unfortunately the manual doesn't do an amazing job of explaining this feature either. Generally speaking, the manual is great at covering the basics, but lacking on the advanced features (which I would assume are the ones users would be more likely to refer to the manual for).

For those who are having trouble figuring this out, the confusion arises because the remote control selections are labeled by AUDIO input, but the input assignment menu is grouped by VIDEO input. So although it looks like you are assigning AUX1 audio to Component Video, for example, in reality you are assigning Component Video to AUX1 audio. This is because the mode you will select when operating the soundbar is AUX1, and the soundbar will then know to pass through Component Video to the television set. I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense as written, but it's somewhat non-intuitive as I explained.

So far, my biggest gripe is actually with a technical limitation. The YSP-3050BL only supports up to 1080i input through component, and not full 1080p as it should. (Though some will mistakenly claim otherwise, component video does indeed support full 1080p, and I've been using 1080p over component on my Xbox 360 for a long time now.) This limitation was not made obvious anywhere, and took an e-mail to Yamaha support to determine why my component video was not being passed through. Thus, I have been faced with the choice of lowering the quality of my video to 1080i or sending the video signal directly to the TV and not taking advantage of the receiver-function of the soundbar. To Yamaha's credit, their support was knowledgeable and quick to respond.

PRICE: Let's face it, 00 is a little steep, especially when major competitors (e.g., Sony HTCs) are in the 0-range. That being said, all accounts point to the Yamaha as offering superior audio. It's probably not 0 worth, and you certainly can find a full 5.1 system for less than 00. But there are many reasons a full 5.1 or 7.1 setup are not practical, and if you have the extra cash this is guaranteed to deliver a good audio experience.

Sounds good, but has limited HDMI inputs - Mike B - Maryland
I was debating 4 or 5 stars on the rating its probably 4.5. The setup/manual is a little daunting . Took about 2-3 hours to decipher the remote buttons, the different hookup options and set my specific system up. Came nicely packaged like you would expect for premium Yamaha audio items. The calibration process is neat to watch.

Only problems so far are limited HDMI inputs. A DVD and a cable box are bare minimum HDMI connections and thats all the YSP3050 supports. If you have other HDMI inputs you are out of luck. I decided to hook the optical PCM TV outputs into the YSP3050 instead of putting the YSP3050 as central to my system via HDMI switching and having to rewire all the HDMI connections. Although with the PCM optical hookup the readout on the box indicates 2 channels in not sure if/why I can't get 5.1 out of the PCM optical port.

Second issue is the vague or non-existant mounting instructions. It would be nice if there were mount plates provided or built in mounting holes. For me an ideal location is above the TV and there is no clear way to do that with no apparent sturdy YSP3050 mounting holes for the 25 lb box.

My Harmony remote was able to be programmed to handle all the needed functions so the TV/cable/dvd/appleTV/game console all work with the YSP3050 albeit not thru HDMI. Although Harmony setup lists the device as a audio amplifier not a sound bar.

I've re-done the auto setup cal a few times as I move things around, just takes a minute or so. It does seem to setup the level of the external sub woofer also so you don't need to play with your sub outputs by ear. You can always go back to the sub after the cal and adjust the signal up or down to your tastes but when you do the next cal the YSP will flatten out the changes again.

One of the other posts said there was no remote control of the sub, however there is a "night time" mode which cuts the sub outputs down. Its in the manual.

Last little nit was the built in FM tuner. The sensitivity with the provided antenna plugged into the RF coax connector is pretty low. Almost all the local FM channels sounded slightly noisy. I'd probably basically skip that or try a larger external antenna. It was handy for a quick power up check of the unit, I have not used the built-in FM since.

Easy Surround Sound - V-Ron - Pittsburgh, PA United States
I received a large screen Panasonic HDTV for my birthday, and although I loved the picture, I was not satisfied with the sound coming from the built-in speakers. The TV is in our bedroom, and therefore, I did not want to go with a multi-speaker setup. I decided to look at soundbars. I probably would have gone with the soundbar made by KEF or Definitive Technology, because they make such excellent speakers in general, but the soundbars made by those 2 companies do not come equipped with built-in amplification. Again, I wanted to minimize the number of additional pieces of equipment which had to be added, so I decided to look into Yamaha's sound projector selection, due to the fact that Yamaha has an excellent reputation, has been making sound projectors for longer than most other manufacturers, and does include amplification in the single unit. Yamaha has a wide selection of sound projectors, ranging in price from around 0 to over 00. I felt that I wanted to spend no more than 00, which led me to the YSP-3050. At the time, Amazon was offering it as a "bundle" with a free Yamaha subwoofer, and that convinced me to take the plunge. Although the sound from the YSP-3050 is significantly better than the sound from the TV speakers, I do not think it is as good as would be expected from separate speakers and a receiver. Of course, that is also not what Yamaha promised. All things considered, for someone who does not want separates, I would strongly recommend this system. I have 2 cautionary things to mention: First, Yamaha states that this system is simple to set up. However, the manual is close to 100 pages long! It is true that the initial setup is relatively simple, but perfecting the system for your room, and understanding the variations that can be implemented, is not so simple. Second (and I think this is a big one): some of the higher priced Yamaha sound projectors come with a jack that allows you to turn the subwoofer on and off with the remote control from the sound projector. The YSP-3050 does not include that jack, so the subwoofer has to be turned on and off manually. If you plan on getting a Yamaha subwoofer, you might want to consider one of higher priced Yamaha sound projectors which come with this jack.

Great Deal Coby DVD938 5.1-Channel DVD Home Theater System with Digital AM/FM Tuner (Black)

This was such a great deal that I went ahead knowing it was probably just functional, not amazing. With these very low expectations, I am happy with it. When I attached my tv using the green/blue/red rca cables i got a pink picture, but found later that you have to select this output in the setup menu for it to view correctly. I am able to connect my cable box and bluray player to the single rca audio input using two cheap rca y adapters for surround sound. The decoder in the unit is able to convert rca to 5.1 channel provided you select digital output spdif/raw in settings (i thought for a while it did not work, but I just needed to change the setting). When I played a 5.1ch dvd on my bluray with rca audio input thru the coby, the sound seemed the same as when I it played directly on the coby player. I can use netflix and pandora on my blueray with audio thru the coby. I plan to use the coby player just for usb/sd/cd music, and save video playback for my blueray. The tuner is a nice back up, but not easy to use. It would probably benefit from better speaker wire for better sound, which just barely fills my 20x20 room. The menus are aggravating and you can only adjust audio settings when the disk is source. Not impressive if you accustomed to top of the line electronics, but certainly good enough for someone like me who had nothing before. No idea how long it will last.

love it it is great i use it all the time for everything my computer my xbox and dvds starts at volume 34 but i like it loud people next door not so mutch.

Yamaha RX-V3900BL 7.1-Channel Network Home Theater Receiver (Black)

Great Deal Yamaha RX-V3900BL 7.1-Channel Network Home Theater Receiver (Black)

I have long been a Denon Fan and when it came time to replace my Harmon-Kardon receiver I had every intention of picking up a Denon as I had been pleased with other Denon products in the past. When I did a head to head comparison between the V3900 and the Denon 3808, I just prefered the sound of the Yamaha better. I had already made up my mind and wanted to like the Denon more, but the Yamaha sound just had more presence.

I have had the V3900 for 3 months now. The sound is great paired with my Pardigm speakers. The dialog for movies seems clearer than with my Harmon-Kardon unit. I have my own sound meter and have been disappointed with the auto setups in the past, but Yamaha EQ was almost spot on. I had to tweak the base a bit, but that is more personal preference. I think the effectiveness of the setup is somewhat room dependent as I set up a room for my neighbors house and it just did not work well.

The onscreen menus are a breeze and fairly intuitive. Firmware Updates can be done either over the network or via a USB key. It is a very simple process and Updates at this time are free.

Video upscaling is unexpectedly terrific. My wife has an old collection of Disney VCRs and the upscaling was near DVD quality. The same thing happened when I played my Ipod Videos on my 50 inch plasma. I was expecting dismal image quality as Ipod videos just are not designed for the big screen. Instead I got very good video quality--not DVD Blueray quality but non-high def cable TV quality images. Apparently the Anchor Bay chip is capable of doing alot. How much of that power is accessible to the user depends on the software implementation used by unit in which it finds its home. In the V3900 Yamaha chose not to unleash the full power of the chip. Want more features from the same chip? Then you have to go up to higher Yamaha models.

The Ipod interface is also good, but has a few quirks. When the Ipod is connected the menus for the Ipod don't come up automatically. You need to hit the display or menu button. The IPOD onscreen menus in my opinion work better than the Menus using just the unit itself. Perhaps future firmware updates will clean that up a bit.

The only real downside--and it is a minor annoyance is the slow switching. For example when I turn on the TV cable box and receiver, the receiver takes a noticible time to find the right inputs. I would have liked to see the dynamic volume implemented by Yamaha as well. I really hate having the volume cranked by commercials. It is a feature I really liked on the Denon. But the Yamaha sound pushed me over to the dark side.

Aesthetics: Well it's a big black box. My wife misses the sleek look of the Harmon-Kardon with its glowing blue dial. But this is a problem for Denon as well.

Overall Great Receiver.
YAMAHA 3900 RECEIVER - venkata -
I have been using Yamaha receivers for the last 5 years, starting with RX-V 1500. RX-V series are superior in sound quality to the other receivers by yamaha. My Yamaha 1500 and 1600 did not allow volume monitoring on Samsung 40 inch LCD TV. Sound quality of 3900 is by far the best i have listened to. One set back is the receiver gets warm and this was the case with RX-v 1600. I installed a small electric fan at the rear end of the receiver and it helps. In summer i do not use Ac and 1500 and 1600 models used to become warm in half an hour.
The HDMI is in my opinion is the best thing that happened to music after the discovery of stereophonic sound. Zune MP3 players
share in the market especially after the introduction of HD 32 and 16GB players has increased. Hoping in future Yamaha will come up with a dock for them
Fantastic Audio and Video - Smooth Audio -
Pro's: Everything the RX-V3900 has to offer.
U won't find a better AVR at 50% off.

Con's: None here.

Great Deal Apple iPod nano 8 GB Graphite (6th Generation) NEWEST MODEL

Bought the 8G version for 9 and wouldn't trade it for the world. The features I enjoy are the size, the weight, the clip, the music playback time and the touch screen. What a combination! Who really uses the other features on this? Don't they have smart phones for that? I bought an IPOD lightweight bluetooth transmitter with a plantronics wireless headset. Well worth the investment. I workout with it every day! In the morning I can't wait to clip the ipod (with the BT transmitter) onto my tank top and start my training routine listening to my favorite music or podcast. Extremely lightweight with no bothersome wires to get in the way or inadvertently hook on to. Took 1 star off for not including the bluetooth feature. Other than that, beautiful! Hi praise to Apple!

What the heck apple???? - kevin corbi -
I have been a fan of ipods since the 07-08 nano came out and then when they released the 3rd generation Ipod touch. I thought I was hooked until I got one of these. I liked the 4th and 5th gen ipod nano- great screen, good controls, camera with video was great along with coverflow for music and seeing the list of songs by an artist. I went wrong with this and returned it just as I did my 3rd gen Ipod touch. Apple seems to release some great looking ipods without very good quality. My ipod nano was too small on the screen to see more then a couple songs by the same artist and on top of that, they stripped off features that I really liked on older generations of nano. This is basically a stripped version of nano that isnt really a nano, but a shuffle in disguise. I really liked apple at first, but after this and a lemon of an ipod touch, which had a list of its own problems- they were both returned and I will not be buying anything anytime soon. I would much rather wait until apple figures its junk out, and gets itself back into making interesting and useful products. I will be looking forward to hopefully seeing video and camera on the nano once they have perfected this new design, and the same with the ipod touch, but for now- I am on hiatus from apple products as I felt like these new lines are leaving much to be desired in many ways. If you want to just listen to music and not see what is playing or going to play next fine- but having a screen that is far too small and all the good features taken away this device is NOT in any worth the 150- 180$ they want for a roided up version of the shuffle. Like many other people say, if you dont care about anything but playing music and not seeing much info about anything, then this is fine, but there are other mp3 players now that will eventually give apple a run for their money.

It Is What It Is - lrc13 - Larsen, WI United States
Why? Because they can. Solidly built little jewel which like many Apple products is drastically overpriced for what it is. Almost to the point of being a novelty item now...a stocking stuffer for the well-heeled.
